The overwhelming majority of criminal cases filed daily by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office don’t receive public attention. That’s not the fault of the public or news reporters — it’s understandable with the volume of felony cases we file each day.

The KCPAO is sharing the number of adult cases filed each day and additional details about a handful of specific cases to highlight information about the kind of cases we handle.

Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the First Degree

From the charging documents:

When police responded, the defendant refuse to comply with their request to exit the residence and told officers that he had firearms and it was his right to have them. The defendant did eventually exit the residence after a prolonged standoff. The defendant then changed his story and said he only had a bb gun a .357 revolver was found concealed in a cereal box on top of the refrigerator. .40 caliber ammunition was also found in the apartment but no other firearm was located. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office argued that the defendant should be held on $75,000 bail because the defendant was intoxicated became verbally abusive to his girlfriend and then came out of the bedroom waiving a loaded firearm in his girlfriend’s face. The first appearance judge released the defendant on his personal recognizance.

Burglary In The Second Degree

From the charging documents:

In the present case, the defendant broke into a vacant building and attempted to seal copper wiring (8700 block of Greenwood Avenue North). The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office argued that the defendant should remain in jail on $10,000 because he has a history of 12 warrants including one active warrant. The first appearance judge released the defendant on his personal recognizance.

Attempted Theft In The First Degree

From the charging documents:

In this case, the defendant forcefully grabbed the victim’s purse, knocking her down, and dragging her in an attempt to steal it. It then took two men to detain the defendant before law enforcement arrived to the scene in the Sea-Tac parking garage. These specific facts indicate the defendant is likely to commit a violent offense if released and that he poses a threat to the community. The State is also concerned about the defendant’s Washington criminal history which includes the following convictions: Commission of a Hate Crime (2021); Property Destruction (2011); Criminal Trespass 1 (2014); Theft 3 (2014); Criminal Trespass 2 (2015); Theft 3 (2015) x2; Assault 4 (2015); Harassment (2015); Assault 4 (2016); and Assault 4 (2017). The defendant’s interview report also indicates prior convictions Disorderly Conduct (2007) and Petit Larceny Shoplifting (2008) out of Virginia. Furthermore, the defendant is unlikely to appear for court if released as there have been 28 bench warrants issued for the defendant’s failure to appear The State requests bail set in the amount of $75,000.00.

Assault In The Third Degree

From the charging documents:

The State requests the court set bail in this matter in the amount of $50,000.00 as was set at First Appearance because of the likelihood that the defendant will commit a violent offense and because of the likelihood that the defendant will interfere with witnesses or the administration of justice. In this present case, the defendant is captured on video striking the victim multiple times in the back and side of head, even striking the victim while he was down on the ground. As a result of the defendant’s violent and egregious actions, the victim suffered a large laceration and had to be taken to the hospital. The defendant has a current pending charge in Seattle Municipal Court for Assault 4 (DOV 4/1/22).
