Attempted Murder in the First Degree

From the charging documents:

The full horror of the defendant’s plans came to light when he spoke to arresting officers. He said “I came in here today, I knew the owners were gone and I planned on killing people.” He admitted he came with rope and hammer in addition to the large knife. The defendant said he was “trying to find his place in the world” and found himself “having so much rage and hate towards everybody.” The defendant admitted that he was not targeting anyone in particular that day but was planning on killing anyone he saw. He knew the crew was “getting spooked out” by his behavior and went into the yard knowing he wanted to kill the victim. He admitted that while he stabbed the victim once, he tried to get him a few times. When asked if he was planning this, the defendant said “it was pretty rough. Sort of like things I could do, but just people I knew, and looked for opportunities and this was one. To kill somebody and make myself seen.” In perhaps the most horrifying admission of all, the defendant said he planned on killing “as many people as possible.”

Arson in the First Degree

From the charging documents:

As the certification and police reports describe, the defendant called 911 to report that he had a knife. Once officers arrived he used his mother as a human shield and demanded to talk to someone with the fire department and made comments about the officers shooting him. After a twenty minute standoff the defendant released his mother and set fire to her apartment. The fire necessitated officers on scene to evacuate the rest of the apartment building, which was occupied at the time he set the fire.
