Charges filed by the KCPAO: Thursday, Dec. 22

The overwhelming majority of criminal cases filed daily by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office don’t receive public attention.

That’s not the fault of the public or news reporters — it’s understandable with the volume of felony cases we file each day.

The KCPAO is sharing the number of adult cases filed each day and additional details about a handful of specific cases to highlight the kinds of cases we handle. Details of the alleged crimes below are from the public charging documents.

Hate Crime

On the evening of Dec. 20, near 6th Avenue and Virginia Street in Seattle, a woman approached a Black man and began swearing at him. He had to step back to get out of her reach. When the man took out his phone and said he was calling 911, the defendant produced a knife and told the man to “watch his back,” using the N-word. The man was in fear for his life. The incident happened without provocation. The defendant had eight previous arrests in Washington state going back several years, and in October 2022 — two months before this incident — she walked away from a mental health facility after having been released by staff at Western State Hospital, run by the State Department of Social and Health Services. The report mentions a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Assault in the Third Degree

On December 20, Sound Transit security officers were clearing a transit train in North Seattle and the defendant was sleeping on it. The defendant immediately became aggressive, and the two security officers had to back up all the way to the other side of the train car to avoid the defendant’s advancement. One was able to get the defendant off the train. The defendant swung at him with closed fist and missed. The defendant also pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the security guard on the neck, then later sprayed him again. The defendant has multiple misdemeanor convictions, including two assault cases.

Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act (possession with intent — cocaine x2)

Seattle Police watched they defendant in two separate months during two drug operations. In the first, from September, the defendant was found with more than $500 and 34 grams of cocaine near 2nd Avenue and Blanchard Street. In the second, from Dec. 20, the defendant was found with more than $2,000 and 14 grams of cocaine near 2nd Avenue and Bell Street.
