The KCPAO is sharing the number of adult cases filed each day and additional details about a handful of specific cases to highlight information about the kind of cases we handle.

Failure to Register as a Sex Offender
From the charging documents:
The defendant is required to register for 10 years due to his prior convictions for Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes. That incident occurred in 1999, and he was subsequently convicted of Luring in 2006 and Assault in the Third Degree in 2019, meaning he must register through 2029. The State requests bail set at $20,000 because the defendant is unlikely to appear in response to a summons and abide by the court’s orders. The defendant has been convicted of Failure to Register on 12 prior occasions between 2005 and 2018 and also has convictions for indecent exposure. The defendant last registered in February 2020, registering as lacking a fixed residence (experiencing homelessness) with a contact point of 7th Avenue and James Street in Seattle.

Attempted Theft of a Motor Vehicle

In this case, the defendant attempted to flee the scene by ramming a car into a closed gate with several individuals around. The State requests bail set in the amount of $25,000 because the defendant is not likely to appear in response to a summons and he poses a danger to the community. The defendant has had 47 warrants issued, 2 of which are currently active. One warrant is active out of Puyallup Municipal Court # 2A0061605 and the other is active out of Kent Municipal Court # K00122432. The defendant has 6 open and pending cases in municipal courts: Federal Way Municipal, Puyallup Municipal, and Seattle Municipal.

Murder in the Second Degree
From the charging documents:
This past week, the defendant shot an unarmed guest to his home in the head with a 9mm handgun. A search of the defendant’s bedroom where the murder took place located a shotgun, an AK-47, at least 5 five handguns, and considerable amounts of ammunition. In his gun safe in the garage of the defendant’s residence, officers serving an Extreme Risk Protection Order recovered more firearms and ammunition. Although police have now recovered the above described weapons, the great quality of weapons possessed by the defendant establishes that he knows how to and is able to acquire firearms and ammunition with relative ease. Further, his parents report recent mental instability on the part of the defendant. Since his arrest, he had been held on the 7th Floor of the King County Jail. The combination of his mental state, his ability to secure firearms and ammo, and his willingness to use lethal force establishes the defendant is a clear danger to the community. Despite his minimal criminal history, the defendant faces a sentence of 15 to 23 years in prison on the Murder in the Second-Degree charge when coupled with the Firearm Enhancement. His mental health status combined with this considerable amount of confinement makes the defendant a significant flight risk. The requested bail in the amount of $2,000.000.00 is appropriate.
